Italian chef moves to Liverpool to open restaurant after 'falling in love' during brief visit

An Italian chef who only came to Liverpool for a "visit" loved the city so much that he stuck around to open his own restaurant.

Award-winning chef Mimmo Tabib hails from Rome, Italy, where his fresh and authentic cooking garnered much attention and praise - and several awards. A decade ago, he ventured to Liverpool for a holiday and "fell in love with the city", determined to make it his new home.

After working in restaurants across Liverpool and making a name for himself in Merseyside, Mimmo has now opened Pitfire in Waterloo. The new venture officially opened on Thursday, August 4 and Mimmo is keen for the people of Merseyside to enjoy an "authentic experience".

Speaking to the Echo, Mimmo, 32, said: "I love the city, I came for a visit one day around 10 years ago and I fell in love - that same day, I got a job in a restaurant so I could stay. I've been here ever since.

"I want to give my customers an authentic experience. I'm a very creative chef, I like having the freedom to be creative with food and I want to give our customers something special.

"I would like to send my message of creativity to my customers, so when they leave the restaurant they know they've had a really good experience. People who come to Pitfire should expect fresh, organic pizzas.

"We're an authentic Italian kitchen and everything is made fresh by our chefs. We do our own specials and I want to do only organic things. Our sourdough is made from organic flour, it’s handmade and left to prove for 48 hours so it’s soft and delicate."

Pitfire was opened by Mimmo and his brother, Amedeo. Mimmo said: "Me and my brother opened Pitfire together - he's part of my success from the beginning."

Of the brothers' hopes for Pitfire's future, Mimmo added: "We have Neapolitan wood-fired pizzas so I hope people come in and see for themselves and taste our food. I'm a master chef, I've opened many places before and made them successful [and that's my hope] for Pitfire."

Pitfire is located at 4 South Road, Waterloo, Liverpool, L22 5PQ. It's open from 1pm seven days a week. You can find more information here.
