Italy's data protection authority, Garante, has taken action to protect users' data by blocking access to the Chinese AI application DeepSeek. This decision comes after the authority expressed dissatisfaction with DeepSeek's lack of transparency regarding the collection and storage of personal data, as well as how users are notified.
Garante announced that it is launching an investigation into the companies behind the chatbot due to concerns over data privacy. The companies reportedly claimed that they do not operate in Italy and that European legislation does not apply to them, despite the app being downloaded by millions of users globally in a short period.
DeepSeek's new chatbot has emerged as a significant player in the AI technology race, posing a challenge to American generative AI leaders at a fraction of the cost. This development has caused a stir in the market and highlights the growing importance of data protection and privacy in the digital age.
