Former Everton forward Gary Lineker has admitted he should have won the league during his time at Goodison Park.
The ex-England international joined the Blues in the summer of 1985 from boyhood club Leicester City for a fee of £800,000. Lineker went on to score 40 goals in 57 appearances in the solitary season he played for the club, including goals in all three Merseyside derby matches he contested.
However, his goals weren’t enough to ensure the league title remained at Goodison Park. In the end, the Blues were pipped to the crown by local rivals Liverpool.

And reflecting on the near miss, Lineker has opened up on how much he regrets not being able to secure top spot during his one season at Everton.
“That’s one more than me, of any league…second I think four times, maybe,” the BBC presenter said on the Match of the Day Top 10 podcast.
With Micah Richards saying in response: “Second four times?” Before Lineker replied: “Should’ve won it with Everton.”
To which Richards replied: “So wait, they brought you in to win the league?”
Linker then said: “No, they won the league the season before. And then they won the league the season after! I was only there one year.”
To which Alan Shearer then interjected and added: “I’ve never known that before. Great Gary Lineker brought in to win the title, and you cost Everton the title?" Lineker then replied: “It wasn’t my fault.”
