'It was like a swimming pool here': Homes without water after pipe bursts again

Homes and businesses have been without water in parts of Wigan and Leigh this morning after a troublesome water pipe burst yet again. Some residents woke up to no running water at home today (April 29), while others reported having low water pressure.

United Utilities says the incident, which was first reported shortly after 7am, is affecting residents in both the WN2 and WN7 postcodes. People on social media have reported having no running water in areas including Westleigh, Hindley Green and central Leigh.

The company says the issue has been caused by a burst on Nel Pal Lane, in Leigh, where multiple bursts have been reported over the past week. In an online update after 9am, a United Utilities spokesperson added: "We're on with it and our team will be in the area as soon as possible to get this fixed."

A burst water pipe on Nel Pan Lane appeared like a fountain in the early hours of Tuesday morning, with water rushing from the main into the air and flooding the street. Residents told the Manchester Evening News that a number of bursts around Westleigh had been causing water pressure issues in recent weeks.

Westwell Street resident Phil Bailey, 66, told the M.E.N.: "I saw it on my camera when I looked [on Tuesday] morning and I saw water sprayed over my car. I was about to come out and have a shower.

"I've phoned them three times this morning, but it's been going on for around three weeks." He added: "It could bust again that."

Another resident said: "It's been a nightmare, my water has been working, but for others it hasn't. It was like a swimming pool here, I thought we would have have had ducks on."

Water supply has started returning to some residents in WN7 today since around 10.45am, but there are reports of water appearing brown from the tap. Following leaks earlier this week, a United Utilities spokesperson said: "Our teams are working hard to resolve the issue which has been caused by a fault on the local water pressure management system.

"Our specialists teams are working hard carrying out investigations and repairs we will continue to have a presence in the area until this is resolved.” The company has been approached for further comment today.
