'It was a bit of a joke!' - Gerwyn Price reveals how shock boxing bout emerged and why he's doing it

Gerwyn Price has revealed his upcoming charity boxing contest started off as a joke before the fight was officially struck.

The 36-year-old has confirmed he will take to the ring to fight former professional Rhys Evans at the Valley Tavern in Fleur De Lys on April 9.

Funds raised will be donated to charities in Wales, with Price stating he needs to lose 10kgs before donning his boxing gloves.

And the darts star says things have now got "serious" after initially starting out as a bit of fun.

"It was a bit of a joke to start off, but things have got a bit serious now," he said on Sky Sports.

"One of my mates, he is an ex-pro and a very good boxer. I've got to get some training in and get myself ready otherwise I'm going to look stupid.

"It's for charity, it's for Cancer Research Wales and Velindre, another cancer company in Wales which is going to be good because it's for a good cause, so I'm looking forward to that."

Following the news of his upcoming bout, darts world number one Price stunned the Belfast crowd by hitting two nine-darters en route to winning night three of the 2022 Premier League.

The Welshman defeated Michael Smith 6-3 in the quarter-finals before beating Michael van Gerwen 6-5 in the semi-finals.

During his last-four triumph over Dutchman van Gerwen, Price notched the first of two perfect legs at the SSE Arena, despite dropping his sixth dart before regaining his composure.

He then came from 4-3 down to beat James Wade in the final, hitting yet another nine-darter in the process before ending the contest with an average of 105.32.

Victory for Price - who banked a £10,000 bonus for winning night three in Northern Ireland - lifted the Welshman up to second in the Premier League standings, with compatriot Jonny Clayton sitting at the top of the pile.

He also created history by joining Phil Taylor as the only player to hit two nine darters on a Premier League night.

Speaking after his remarkable efforts on Thursday night, Price said: "I put it down to being been back in the gym and looking after myself.

"The last two-and-a-half weeks I've been putting some hard work in at the gym.

"Tonight I felt like I couldn't miss. I feel on top of the world right now."
