It's time for a hard-hitting TV drama about Scottish independence

SQUARE-EYED Keir Starmer has been watching the gogglebox again.

His latest idea is to screen Netflix’s smash hit Adolescence in schools across England in a bid to tackle misogyny among young men.

The PM seems less interested in pouring cash into youth clubs, mental health services or other things that might help isolated teenagers getting ensnared by cult-y online communities of violent, women-hating weirdos.

It comes after the entire political establishment suddenly became convinced of the need to compensate sub-postmasters who were fitted up for fraud after watching Mr Bates vs the Post Office.

It’s a sorry state of affairs that pressing political issues seem only to get the attention of the powers that be when they are remoulded into hard-hitting TV dramas.

Still, while the going’s good, we’ve had an idea.

We’re calling for some hip young gunslinger in the Scottish TV industry to make a gritty drama – something the Bafta panel might call “spellbinding” or “the most compelling show you’ll watch this year" – about independence.

Because we’re merely journalists, not screenwriters, we don’t have the full details sketched out.

But something about a nation bound into an involuntary Union while its citizens watch on powerlessly as things worse every year as their votes are ignored over and over again seems like it could have legs.

Perhaps we could get Brian Cox in the lead role?

He would barely even need to act…
