'It's the pinnacle' - Liverpool Women to play Merseyside derby with Everton at Anfield

Liverpool Women have announced September's Merseyside derby with Everton will be played at Anfield.

The fixture on September 25 marks the first time LFCW have played a Women's Super League match at the venue since 2019 when a crowd of over 23,000 turned out to watch a visit from the Blues.

Matt Beard's team returned to the Super League by winning the Championship last term and they were able to celebrate their success alongside Jurgen Klopp's men's squad in the end-of-season parade watched by an estimated crowd of around 750,000 supporters.

With England's Lionesses set for a European Championship final showdown with Germany at Wembley on Sunday evening, Liverpool's announcement comes during something of a boom period for the women's game.

Manager Matt Beard said: “It’s going to be a fantastic occasion. Watching the last game in 2019, with more than 23,000 in the stadium, the atmosphere sounded unbelievable.

“The Merseyside derby is the first fixture I look for as we really missed the game last year. It’s great to be playing Everton again and even better that it will be at Anfield.

"Anfield may be a little more accessible than Prenton Park for a lot of our supporters and hopefully they will come along next month and then start to make the trip to see us even more often.

Liverpool captain Niamh Fahey was among the team who played at Anfield in 2019 and described leading the team out in the derby as "the pinnacle".

“It’s a special thing to play at Anfield," she said. "Not everyone gets to do that. We got a great support there last time so hopefully we get the same again.

“That buzz from the crowd was unbelievable, that roar trying to get us over the line – it’s going to be epic! Hopefully I get the chance to lead the team out. It’s the pinnacle isn’t it? Leading your team out at Anfield for a Merseyside derby - it doesn’t get better than that!”

Liverpool are hopeful the rise of the women's game, particularly since the start of the Euros, will see them eclipse the 23,500 crowd of 2019, although ticket details for the WSL fixture with their local rivals will be released at a later date.
