'It's still open' - Ilkay Gundogan agent gives update on Man City captain's future and transfer talks

Ilkay Gundogan's future may not be resolved until the end of the season as the Manchester City captain enters the final three months of his current contract.

Gundogan can leave City on a free transfer in the summer if a new contract is not arranged, and has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona in the Spanish media. In fact, some reports claim Gundogan, 32, has a pre-agreement with Barcelona, while other clubs around Europe have also been mentioned as interested parties.

However, Gundogan's agent insists there are no agreements with City or any other club, and that the German is only focussed on a successful end to the season with the Blues.

Gundogan's agent is also his uncle, and has told the Guardian that nothing has been decided over the midfielder's future. Gundogan sat out the international break following the birth of his son, and is back in contention to face Liverpool at the weekend as City go in search of a treble.

“There’s definitely no agreement yet with any club,” Ilhan Gundogan said.

“The focus of Ilkay in recent weeks was only on Manchester City and the birth of his son. Now he is in the final and crucial phase of the season and is completely focused on that. Where Ilkay plays next season is still open.”

In February, Pep Guardiola told Gundogan that he had earned the right to decide his own City future following his title-winning goals vs Aston Villa last season.

The manager said: "I think I know my opinion about Ilkay. What Ilkay has done against Aston VIlla last season he can do whatever he wants. He has the paradise already. So he knows exactly my opinion about him.

"The club knows it and it is a question for him and his agent. What is going to happen I’m pretty sure is going to be good for him.

"Really we want how he is behaving, how he has behaved all his life in Manchester but what is going to happen? This kind of things belongs to the club and the player."
