It’s over: Numbers prove Commanders’ Jayden Daniels is the Offensive Rookie of the Year

What kind of year is Commander’s rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels actually having?

He is not going to break Sonny Jurgensen’s franchise record of 31 passing touchdowns in a season, but Daniels is making his mark, and in his very first NFL season. Keep in mind, Sonny accomplished this in a 14-game regular season in 1967.

But back to Daniels. He is having a terrific year, and this talk of Rookie of the Year being undecided is a fallacy. Daniels is the best rookie this season and his numbers leave no question.

  • With his three passing touchdowns against the Falcons, Jayden Daniels became the eighth rookie quarterback in NFL history to have five straight games with at least two touchdown passes.
  • Through 16 games, Daniels has completed 325 of his 468 passing attempts (69.4 percent) for 3,530 yards, 25 touchdowns and 9 interceptions.
  • Daniels is second in all of the NFL in yards gained per rushing attempt (6.0) second only to Lamar Jackson. Daniels has rushed for 864 yards, surpassing Robert Griffin’s 815 franchise record in 2012.
  • Against Atlanta, for the first time in his career, Jayden Daniels passed for over 200 yards (227) while also rushing for over 100 yards (127).
  • Daniels is the first NFL rookie quarterback with 10+ wins, 30+ touchdowns and 4,000+ total yards in 16 games.
  • Daniels is the fifth rookie quarterback since 1950, and the first since Andrew Luck in 2012 to pull off 10+ point comebacks in back-to-back weeks (Last week Washington trailed Philadelphia 14-0, 21-7 and 27-14 before winning 36-33).
  • Daniels is tied for second with Jared Goff in comeback wins (4),  and tied for fourth in game-winning drives (4).
  • How about the NFL QBR rating: Lamar Jackson 78.0, Josh Allen 76.7, Joe Burrow 76.7, and Jayden Daniels 72.4.
  • In pass completion percentage Daniels is sixth at 69.4 percent.
  • In the NFL Passer Rating, Daniels is ninth at 101.2.

It’s been a great rookie season for Daniels. Who knows, though they will be a road underdog, maybe Daniels can lead Washington to its first playoff win since the 2005 Redskins went to Tampa and beat the Buccaneers.
