'It's not slang': English TikToker accused of 'generalising' Scottish accents

AN English TikToker has been accused of “generalising” Scottish accents after they claimed it was the most difficult UK accent for Americans to understand.

English content creator Jase (@jaseinamerica), who posts videos doing impressions of different accents and comparing cultural life in the UK and the US, claimed the “Scottish” accent was “the most difficult British accent for Americans to understand”, followed by the Scouse and Geordie accents.

He said: “Scottish has to be impossible for people to understand, especially if a Scottish person is speaking very fast, you haven’t got a chance.

“Now I don’t know what it is about the Scottish accent, there’s a lot of slang so it’s difficult to understand.”

He was met with criticism, as one TikTok user commented: “No such thing as a Scottish accent.”

Another said: “Slang in Scottish accent is not slang it’s Scots a language”.

‘You need to be more specific’

American TikToker Tyler Collins (@two_metre_man) then posted a video in response, in which he said “Scottish” is not an accent.

Collins said: “I’m just reiterating what a lot of people in the comments of this video have said.

“Scottish is not necessarily an accent. You have Dundonian, you have Glaswegian, you have Edinburgh, you have Perth.

@two_metre_man No need to dogpile on this creator, but needed to be said. I know its hard to take me seriously with a tiny drawn on mustache. Recorded this before playing a candlestick. #accents #fyp ♬ original sound - Tyler Collins

“You have all of these different accents, yet when you say general Scottish – if you can point out Liverpool and Newcastle then we need to be a little bit more specific.

“When he [original content creator] says that there’s a lot of slang in Scotland, it’s not slang it’s Scots language, which comes from loads of different things – a lot of it from Gaelic, a lot of it from international trade.

“If you were to say Glaswegian is the hardest to understand – which I would agree – that and Doric, but again Doric is another language.

“I’m not trying to throw shade on this guy, I like his accents, he’s great.

“A lot of the time English folk will generalise Scotland and be like, ‘I’ve done a good job’.

“These are the reasons why Scotland doesn’t support England when they play football.”

The video has been met with a positive reaction from Scots, as one person said: “Never in my life did I expect an American to do a Perth accent or even know where Perth was, hats off to him.”

Another said: “He’s right and he should say it”.
