Running back Jonathan Taylor is excited about what’s to come in 2025 for this Indianapolis Colts team.
“It’s going to be special,” said Taylor in an interview with Pro Football Network’s David Bearman on Radio Row.
The 2024 season was another disappointing year for the Colts. They missed out on the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year and still haven’t won the AFC South since 2014.
While inconsistent play and a lack of complementary football plagued them on the field, a root cause of that was complacency and ego, as defensive tackle DeForest Buckner after the season.
GM Chris Ballard would acknowledge that Buckner was correct and called his roster construction approach in 2024, where he prioritized continuity on a team that missed the playoffs the year prior, a “mistake.”
To combat that, Ballard wants to emphasize and add competition throughout the roster this offseason to help create a sense of urgency, which then, in theory, will elevate the level of play.
Some of the bigger positions of need that the Colts have to address are at tight end, safety, cornerback, and potentially the offensive line depending on what happens with free agent Will Fries. Adding competition at quarterback is also on Ballard’s radar as well.
“We’re going to make it happen, but it starts now in the offseason, individually, before guys come together as a team and put together all their new talents and skills that they’ve acquired throughout the offseason,” said Taylor.
Beyond any potential additions that Ballard brings in, helping with what hopefully becomes a quick turnaround for the Colts is new defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo and his disguise-heavy scheme that has kept some of the game’s best quarterbacks and offenses off-balanced.
There are also a number of key players returning for 2025, which includes Buckner, Taylor, a strong receiver room, Laiatu Latu, Zaire Franklin, Quenton Nelson, and Bernhard Raimann.
While it may be a brush filled path in some spots, one can see a path for how the Colts rebound in 2025. But doing so isn’t only about what takes place on the field, but it perhaps begins with the mentality off of it.
“Number one, we’re going to come out firing the Indianapolis Colts,” added Taylor. “We’re going to fight to the very last quarter, but we’re going to come together and we’re going to make it happen.”
