'It's costing me a fortune' Glasgow's potholes leave angry motorists out of pocket

Glaswegians have shared their frustrations at the state of the roads across the city after many have had to spend hundreds of pounds to get their tyres fixed after going through catastrophic potholes.

We previously reported how a business owner called for Glasgow to be renamed 'pothole city' after she spotted at least thirty potholes on Nitshill Road alone.

Now, other motorists have shared their woes over the state of the roads as they slam Glasgow City Council

Siobhan Lyons McPartland said: "Glasgow Roads are ridiculous. Genuinely don't understand why we pay Road Tax - it's not used for long lasting repairs.

"Dumbarton Road has been dug up repaired and replaced again with road fillings for the pot holes and it breaks down again within a week."

Jackie Cumming added: "Went down a huge pothole on the road to Renfrew yesterday at the road next to the airport, thought the wheel was a gonner."

Julie Russell wrote: "The roads around Costco are a disgrace too, especially the roundabouts either side of it. As my Dad used to say, “Potholes big enough to hold a funeral in”. He’s been gone almost 11 years now and nothing has changed."

John Buchanan has booked his vehicle in for a new tyre after it went through a pothole on Great Western Road.

He said: "The roads are a disgrace."

Stella Brown added: "Absolutely disgusting, I've had a puncture due to pothole last night."

Grahame Marlow said: "It is an absolute disgrace, it is impossible to drive on any street in Glasgow without trying to avoid one and blow a tyre."

Joanna Quintana wrote: "Balmore Rd into Glasgow requires a tank now just to get along the road as the road has so many huge potholes."

Marion Lang has described the potholes as 'more like craters'.

She said: "It’s dangerous as well when your having to swerve all over the place just to avoid them."

A frustrated Laura Kirkwood added: "I’m sick to the back of my teeth getting my car repaired cause of potholes. It’s costing me a fortune.

I've had wheel bearings break, cv joints which I never new about and it ended up bursting through my gear box. I hit a huge one in the dark a few weeks ago and think my wheel bearings went again.

"I’m actually into the thousands of repairing my car, it’s a joke."

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: “Potholes can appear at any time but environmental factors such as frost, snow and rain will have a significant impact on condition of the city’s roads.

“Our risk-assessed approach to road maintenance prioritises rapid repairs for the most dangerous faults but also seeks to ensure that any repairs are durable and completed at the first time of asking.

“The most dangerous potholes that create a risk to life will be repaired within 24 hours but maintenance for a range of less serious faults will take longer. This approach is based upon guidance from the Society of Chief Officers of Transportation in Scotland that is followed by local authorities nationally.

“Our roads inspectors undertake their own proactive checks of the city’s road surface on a regular basis but also respond to reports from the public, which allows faults to be properly assessed and appropriately included in our repair programme.

“Potholes and other faults will be monitored and our repairs programme can be adjusted to take account of changes to the risk assessment for particular issues with the road surface.”
