'Carnage' on road dubbed worst in Nottinghamshire because of potholes

Residents living on a Hucknall street have spoken of their disappointment after work to fix the road failed to solve their pothole problem.

Nottinghamshire County Council went to work in Coronation Road, Hucknall, to sort issues with broken pavements and potholes, yet residents and councillors are unhappy with the job that was done.

The street has clearly been worked on, with tarmac and gravel visible, but potholes still remain - with one particularly large one in the centre of the street dubbed “Hucknall's pot-hole in the middle.”

One resident said that the gravel was already beginning to be lifted due to snow and other bad weather.

73-year-old retired resident, Raymond Shilton, said: "They tried to repair it last year but not much has changed.

"We've been saying it's silly how bad it's got.

"Yes you've got lots of issues when you're driving - it's carnage.

"It's been going on for so long now I just think we want it fixed properly. You can see that it's had some work done on it by looking at the tarmac, but it's still a mess."

Kevin Illife, 63, a sheet metal worker, said: "We were supposed to have it taken care of last year.

"To be fair it is a lot better than it has been the whole time I've lived here, it used to be awful.

"I've only been here for five years and the street now looks about 90% done, although I don't understand why there are still potholes.

"It took a long time to get done so you'd expect it to be 100% fixed!

"If you look you can see the gravel is already starting to come up because of the snow and bad weather.

"It's a shame."

Joe Turner, 59, said: "It doesn't bother me quiet so much as I haven't lived here for too long.

"You would expect it to have been thoroughly fixed if that much effort was going to be put into it though, and if it's as bad as people are saying it was.

"Looking at it now I can't say that I've got much of an issue with it, except for that pothole in the middle of the road there - hopefully that can be sorted."

Following a campaign by residents which lasted years, the county council decided to take action around November of last year.

Councillor John Wilmott has also raised the issue in council meetings and meetings of the transport and environment committee.

Ashfield Independent Councillor Wilmott, who represents Hucknall North on Ashfield District Council, said: "I honestly couldn’t answer how this has happened. It’s bonkers.

"You’ve all heard of piggy in the middle – this is pot-hole in the middle. It’s Hucknall’s pot-hole island. It’s potty – I’ve got to admit.

"I was embarrassed by the whole thing. It's the worst road in Nottinghamshire.

"I am a man of few words but even I couldn’t explain this. I have asked the County Council to revisit the road.”

Nottinghamshire County Council has stated that one of the larger potholes in the middle of Coronation Road was not there when work as carried out and that residents can look forward to further improvements in the future.

Gary Wood, Head of Highways and Transport, said: “We carried out a significant amount of structural patching on Coronation Road in November 2021, making improvements to over 600m2 of the road.

“These works were to repair areas where the road surface had deteriorated significantly, with micro asphalt treatment planned to improve the road surface even further in the future.

“The pothole highlighted by Councillor Willmott has developed relatively quickly during the four months since the works took place and was not there when our teams made the improvements.

“We will send an inspector to the site to check the defect and make any repairs as required and residents on Coronation Road can look forward to a further improved surface in a future programme.”
