An 86-year-old grandad who spent years ‘lecturing’ his kids about junk food was caught on camera tucking into his very FIRST McDonald's - and hailed it 'bloody brilliant'. Retired milkman Michael Miller has always told daughter Charlotte Sheridan to stop eating 'rubbish' but when his wife was away for a few days, he finally indulged in the treat.
The grandad-of-15 went out for the day with Charlotte, 44, and her two youngest daughters, Poppy, 12, and Lily Sheridan, nine. As they came back they swung by a McDonald's drive-thru after Michael sheepishly admitted he'd 'always wanted to try a cheeseburger'.
After making their order the expectant family sat in the car, camera poised, to mark the historic occasion. As Michael bit into the patty he made a delighted 'gulp' and revealed it was 'absolutely bloody brilliant'.
His delighted granddaughters have now asked to make a trip to the Farnborough Gate, Hampshire, branch of the Golden Arches a weekly tradition.
Michael, from Yateley, Hampshire, said: "I used to dislike junk food because it just wasn't something I was familiar with. Growing up it was home-cooked meals and takeaways and fast foods just weren't an option so I never really considered them.
"I [now] like a McDonald's because I found the burger to be really nice, it was reasonably priced and I was quite taken aback at the convenience of it all.n I never knew what to order at Mcdonald's. It was always a bit confusing and I never went into the Mcdonald's. Now I've been, it's great. I enjoyed it."
Charlotte said: "My mum had gone to be with her sister and my dad was basically home alone. He's not used to cooking for himself and he wouldn't be inclined to cook for one.
"I said 'I'm popping out Dad, why don't you come and I'll treat you to a McDonald's?'. He said 'I've always wanted to try a cheeseburger. He kept saying 'I'd love to try a cheeseburger. He just ordered a normal cheeseburger.
"It took a few seconds to get his verdict, it was almost like we were all holding our breath. He did a big gulp and all eyes were on him, then he had a big grin on his face and said 'I love it'.
"As for the drive-thru he said 'it's absolutely bloody brilliant'. I said 'do you want to lean across Dad and tell them what you're having?' but he said he wouldn't know where to start."
Charlotte didn't order any fast food for herself, but her two girls wolfed down a portion of fries and a milkshake each - 'stunned' that their grandad chose to wait until his late eighties to experience it. But she admits her dad had double standards after spending years calling it 'rubbish food' whenever he saw the wrappers in her bin.
Charlotte said: "They were stunned that he'd got to that age and never had McDonald's. In our generation, going to McDonald's isn't particularly unusual so imagine going 86 years without it.
"It must be a trend among the older generation, they're discovering McDonald's. I'm a dog walker and I walk a dog for an elderly lady. She said something about her neighbours always having takeaways and she said 'I had a McDonald's the other day and I loved it'.
"Both my mum and dad call it 'rubbish food'. They say 'you've been having that rubbish food again' if I've got the bags in the bin. The girls have asked if we can go with my dad every Friday but I'm not sure I'll be sticking to that."
Michael admitted that he had always found McDonald's 'a bit confusing' but now plans to go back again - possibly even trying the new Spicy Spanish Stack burger. Michael said: "I see McDonald's have got a new burger out, a Spanish one, that was in the paper, a double thing with salad in there and two burgers and dressing.
"I'll probably go back again. It's amazing really. You wander in and it's all coming up on the screen. There's no hanging about."
McDonald's was approached for comment.
