'It never was' - Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp makes Man City trophy claim

Jurgen Klopp has played down Liverpool’s chances of winning a quadruple, and instead made a trophy claim about Manchester City. The Reds are still battling for three major titles after already getting the Carabao Cup under their belts.

Liverpool are in Champions League action this week, as they take on Benfica in the quarter-finals. Klopp’s outfit are also in the FA Cup semi-final and fighting for the Premier League title, taking on Man City in both.

The Reds are one point adrift of Man City in the league table with eight matches left to play, and take on Pep Guardiola’s team later this week. Just a few days later, Liverpool will face City yet again in the FA Cup semi-final.

Klopp believes that even though he is happy for supporters to dream of the club winning an unprecedented quadruple, he doesn't think it’s a realistic goal. The German went on to say that he thinks Man City are more likely to win a treble this term.

“No it’s not [a realistic target] and it never was,” Klopp told former Reds striker Peter Couch in a chat for BT Sport. “You cannot plan it and the schedule makes it really difficult.

“If you are in a league where you are 20 points ahead, you can say ‘that’s not too important anymore’, but for us we have to go for everything in each game and that makes it very unlikely.

“We won the first competition, that’s why we are the only ones who can win the quadruple. But Man City are probably favourites for the treble, that’s how it is.

“That’s the situation we are in and that’s fine, I don’t want to stop the emotions or people getting carried away, I’ve got no problem with that at all.

“I know our people long enough, they are realistic as well but they are ready to dream when there’s a little chance to dream, so I’m absolutely fine with that.

“I couldn’t be more relaxed about it, if we can win one other competition it would already be outstanding, and we don’t even know that yet.

“It’s good, you prepare the whole season a basis for the rest of the season. Now we are at the end of the season, no international break anymore. A tough period, April - crazy, May - hopefully, massive, and we will see what happens.

“We are close enough around the big decisions, that’s really cool.”
