'It is funny' - Jurgen Klopp bemused as startling Liverpool penalty stat emerges

Jurgen Klopp has admitted he is bemused that Liverpool are yet to be awarded a penalty in the Premier League this season.

The Reds have now gone 32 league games since they were last awarded a spot-kick, when Fabinho stepped up to score last April against Watford, with their only penalty in all competitions this season coming in the Champions League when Mohamed Salah scored against Rangers last October.

While Liverpool might not be enjoying their best season, Klopp pointed out how often they still find themselves in the opposition box. And, glad the stat was pointed out to him rather than having to say it himself, he admitted it’s strange that his side have gone so long without being awarded a penalty

“Yeah (it’s strange). With all the bad stats we have this year, until last week or two weeks ago we still have the second most possession, second most shots on goal, second most shots in general,” he said. “Stats wise we are still really up there. We are very often in the opposition’s box.

“I have no clue how that can happen but it happens. When you win you don’t talk about it or think about it. But not getting a penalty for that long time is funny.

“I don’t think we got particularly a lot of penalties in my whole time here and we had periods where we were living in the opposition’s box pretty much. Still not.

“I cannot change that, obviously, but it is cool somebody else found these stats and we didn’t have to mention it! This way is better.”
