'It doesn't matter', Joelinton content to play anywhere ahead of return to special venue for Newcastle star

Joelinton latched on to a fine pass from Christian Atsu, took a touch and slammed it past Hugo Lloris at Tottenham Hotspur's prestine new stadium. That was in 2019 in the Brazilian's third match for Newcastle United and since then there have been ups and downs for the £40million signing.

On a scorching August day, Joelinton pointed to the North London skies and scored what proved to be the winning goal for Steve Bruce. By that stage, Bruce was already under pressure on Tyneside and up against it with some fans.

Joelinton has gone from strength to strength as a player and not in the position many expected after starting off as a striker but now one of the first picks on the team sheet in midfield.

Only 11 goals have followed Joelinton's well-taken strike at Spurs three years ago but a host of his games at Newcastle have come as a midfielder or to the right or left of a front three. Joelinton does not want to get into a debate over his position and told Chronicle Live this month: "For me, the most important thing is to be playing to help the team.

"It doesn't matter whether as a midfielder, striker or any other role. I am available to the coach to give my best on the field."

Eddie Howe refuses to rule out the possibility of Joelinton returning to his frontline at some stage and said before the international break: "I still think there are centre-forward qualities in there.

"Last week we saw that – it was a brilliant header. It was great to see him attack the box. His flexibility is something we’ll utilise but he’s doing so well in midfield I’m reluctant to move him."

And that's where Joelinton will probably start the game against Spurs this weekend with Howe blessed with options in his engine room. The big debate is who will start if Howe decides to go for a 4-3-3 formation for the 10th time this season.

I'd be surprised if Spurs don't go with their tried and tested 3-4-2-1 formation on Sunday. That formation was in use on the night Spurs blew Everton away 5-0 and can be lethal if the home side are in the mood.

In fairness, Newcastle's second, and not as famous a visit to Spurs' new ground, would have been a cricket score had it not been for Karl Darlow last season. Darlow single-handedly kept Spurs at bay for 96 minutes and kept the score at 1-0 before a penalty from Callum Wilson saw Jose Mourinho storm down the tunnel in anger.

Whether Joelinton has his special first goal for the club in his mind at Spurs this time around remains to be seen, but Newcastle will be grateful to anybody who emerges a hero on what will be a tough test in the capital.
