Israeli Tank Backs Into UN Post During Evacuation Mission

Israeli tank manoeuvres near the Israel-Gaza border

Recent events in southern Lebanon have sparked controversy between the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The IDF claims that one of its tanks accidentally backed into a post belonging to UN peacekeepers while evacuating soldiers wounded by an anti-tank missile. On the other hand, UNIFIL accuses the IDF of forcibly entering the post with two tanks, putting the lives of peacekeepers at risk.

UNIFIL reported that the incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. when IDF tanks destroyed the post's main gate and entered the position. The IDF, however, stated that they were attempting to evacuate injured troops who had come under heavy fire from anti-tank missiles. Multiple soldiers were wounded, with two in critical condition, prompting the tank to back into the UNIFIL post for cover.

After the wounded soldiers were evacuated and enemy fire ceased, the tank left the post. The IDF clarified that their actions were not intended to endanger UNIFIL forces and that a smoke screen was used to provide cover during the evacuation. Unfortunately, the smoke caused irritation and reactions among 15 peacekeepers despite wearing protective masks.

The conflicting accounts between the IDF and UNIFIL have raised questions about the incident's circumstances and the safety of peacekeeping forces in the region. Both parties have emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to determine the facts surrounding the event and prevent similar incidents in the future.
