Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has issued a warning that Israel could potentially resume intense warfare in Gaza at any moment, raising concerns about the fragile ceasefire deal with Hamas. This statement follows Israel's decision to delay the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners and detainees, a move that was supposed to happen after Hamas returned six hostages. Israel has expressed discontent with the use of such exchanges as propaganda tools by the militant group.
During his address, Netanyahu expressed gratitude towards US President Donald Trump for his support, attributing it to the successful release of Israeli hostages. He also hinted at future plans for the Palestinian enclave, mentioning Trump's vision of enabling freedom of movement from Gaza and transforming it into a different entity.
Earlier this month, Trump's proposal of permanently relocating Palestinians from Gaza to allow the US to take control of the territory and develop it into a new 'Riviera' sparked widespread criticism in the Middle East and Europe.
Steve Witkoff, Trump's envoy for the Middle East, is scheduled to return to the region soon for discussions on upholding the delicate ceasefire-for-hostages agreement. Despite uncertainties surrounding its future, Witkoff remains optimistic about the deal progressing into a second phase. This phase would involve the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza and the release of all remaining hostages held by Hamas, with talks for this phase initially slated to commence over two weeks ago.
