Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has refuted claims that the Israeli military is intentionally attacking United Nations peacekeepers in southern Lebanon. In a video statement, Netanyahu labeled the allegations as 'completely false' and emphasized that Israel has been urging the United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) to evacuate the combat zone to ensure their safety.
Recent reports from the UN have accused the Israeli military of firing on peacekeepers, trespassing into a UNIFIL base, disrupting logistical operations, and causing injuries to over a dozen UN personnel in southern Lebanon. Israel, on the other hand, has pointed fingers at Hezbollah, claiming that the militant group operates near UNIFIL posts and uses them as shields while launching attacks on Israeli territories.
Netanyahu clarified that Israel's conflict is not with UNIFIL or the people of Lebanon but with Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran and utilizes Lebanese territory to target Israel. He stressed that Hezbollah exploits UNIFIL facilities and positions for cover during its assaults on Israeli cities and communities.
Expressing regret for any harm inflicted on UNIFIL personnel, Netanyahu assured that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are taking all necessary measures to prevent such incidents from recurring. He reiterated Israel's commitment to combating Hezbollah's aggression while maintaining the safety of UN peacekeepers in the region.
