Israeli President Isaac Herzog has publicly confirmed the agreement reached with Hamas, calling it an 'important move' aimed at bringing back the hostages. This marks the first official acknowledgment from Israel regarding the deal.
Herzog emphasized the significance of the agreement while also acknowledging the challenges that lie ahead once it is implemented. He described the situation as one of the greatest challenges Israel has faced and vowed to ensure the safe return of all hostages, expressing regret over the country's failure to protect them.
The president urged sensitivity towards the families of the hostages, particularly those who may not see their loved ones among the 33 individuals expected to be returned in the initial phase of the agreement.
Herzog expressed gratitude towards Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the negotiating team, offering his support for the deal's approval by the government and cabinet. He also extended thanks to mediators from Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, including President-elect Donald Trump and his team.
Netanyahu's office stated that the prime minister would address the public once the deal is finalized. The agreement is set to undergo review by both the security cabinet and the full government cabinet, with opponents having the opportunity to challenge it in the Supreme Court.
Earlier in the day, Herzog met with Mirjana Spoljaric, the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross, to discuss preparations for the transfer of hostages.
