Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid is cutting short his visit to the US and returning to Israel earlier than planned in response to the tragic events that unfolded in Lebanon on Tuesday. The explosions, as reported by Lebanon, resulted in the loss of nine lives and left approximately 2,800 individuals injured.
Lapid's spokesperson, Yair Zivan, confirmed that the decision to alter Lapid's itinerary was prompted by the escalating situation in the region.
The purpose of Lapid's visit to the US, which commenced on Sunday, was to engage in discussions regarding the ongoing negotiations between Israel and Hamas concerning a potential ceasefire-for-hostages agreement.
During his time in Washington, Lapid held a meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday. Following their discussions, Lapid urged the Netanyahu government to intensify efforts towards reaching a mutually beneficial agreement. He expressed his willingness to provide the prime minister with any necessary support to facilitate the deal.
Additionally, Lapid had the opportunity to meet with former US President Barack Obama and US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan during his visit to the US.
