An Israeli missile struck a convoy transporting medical supplies and fuel to an Emirati hospital in the Gaza Strip, resulting in casualties from a local transportation company. The American Near East Refugee Aid group reported that the attack occurred on the Salah al-Din Road in Gaza, killing several individuals employed by the transportation company.
The convoy, organized by Anera and approved by Israeli authorities, was en route to the Emirates Red Crescent Hospital in Rafah. Fortunately, one Anera employee who was part of the convoy remained unharmed. Despite the tragic incident, the remaining vehicles in the convoy managed to deliver the aid to the hospital successfully.
Israeli military spokesperson Lt. Col. Avichay Adraee stated that the missile strike was in response to gunmen seizing a vehicle at the head of the convoy. The Israeli military claimed that targeting the militants' vehicle eliminated the risk posed to the humanitarian convoy.
The United Arab Emirates, which has been providing aid to Gaza and established diplomatic ties with Israel in 2020, has not yet commented on the attack. This incident is not the first time Israeli forces have fired upon aid convoys in Gaza, with previous instances involving organizations like the World Food Program and UNICEF.
It is crucial to ensure the safety and security of humanitarian convoys operating in conflict zones to prevent further harm to aid workers and recipients. Anera is expected to release more details about the incident as investigations continue.
Efforts to deliver essential supplies and support to vulnerable populations in Gaza must be safeguarded to uphold the principles of humanitarian assistance and protect the lives of those involved in relief operations.
