Israeli Hostage Negotiator Criticizes Gaza Ceasefire Deal

Rally demanding ceasefire in Gaza, in Tel Aviv

Veteran Israeli hostage negotiator Gershon Baskin has expressed criticism towards the Gaza ceasefire-for-hostages deal that is currently in the works. Baskin, who played a pivotal role in mediating between Israel and Hamas during the captivity of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, believes that the proposed deal is not favorable due to its extended timeline and lack of certainty.

Baskin highlighted that the deal mirrors a previous offer from May, which he deemed unfavorable. He pointed out that the agreement spans between two to three months, with only 33 hostages set to be released in the initial 42 days, leaving the fate of the remaining hostages uncertain.

Despite his reservations about the deal, Baskin acknowledged the positive aspect of the expected return of hostages and expressed optimism about the potential resolution. He emphasized the importance of bringing an end to the ongoing conflict and the return of the hostages as a significant step towards peace.

Only 33 hostages to be released in initial 42 days, leaving fate of others uncertain.

Reflecting on his past negotiations that led to the release of Gilad Shalit in a major exchange in October 2011, where over 1,000 prisoners were traded, Baskin drew attention to the complexities of hostage negotiations and the delicate balance required to secure favorable outcomes.

Baskin also criticized US President Joe Biden for endorsing what he termed a 'bad deal' and suggested that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's actions may be influenced by a desire to appease President-elect Donald Trump rather than prioritizing the safe return of the hostages.

Despite his concerns, Baskin maintained a sense of hope and welcomed the potential progress towards resolving the hostage situation and bringing an end to the conflict. He emphasized the importance of finding a resolution that prioritizes the well-being of the hostages and contributes to lasting peace in the region.
