Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar confirmed his support for the ceasefire deal in a recent security cabinet meeting. In a detailed Facebook post, Sa’ar expressed that the decision to vote for the ceasefire was necessary at this point in time.
Sa’ar mentioned that he, along with Ze’ev Elkin from the finance ministry, would be voting for the ceasefire in the upcoming full cabinet meeting. Despite acknowledging the critics of the deal, Sa’ar emphasized the importance of respecting and addressing the concerns raised, as there are inherent risks involved.
However, not all members of Israel’s cabinet are in favor of the ceasefire deal. National security minister Itamar Ben Gvir has threatened to withdraw his party’s support for the governing coalition led by Prime Minister Netanyahu if the ceasefire proceeds.
In his statement, Sa’ar admitted to the mistakes made during the negotiation process and expressed his criticism of the talks and the deal's framework. Nevertheless, he highlighted the sense of mutual responsibility among the people of Israel, which compelled him to make the difficult decision to support the ceasefire.
Furthermore, Sa’ar pointed out that the ceasefire would allow Israel to end on a positive note with the outgoing administration in Washington and establish a successful relationship with the incoming administration under President Trump.
When the ceasefire deal was made public, Sa’ar characterized the decision before the cabinet as choosing between 'bad and very bad,' without explicitly stating his voting intention.
