Israeli airstrikes have been carried out targeting Houthi rebels in Yemen in response to a deadly attack claimed by the Iran-backed group on the Israeli city of Tel Aviv. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed the strikes on military targets of the Houthi terrorist regime in the area of the Al Hudaydah (Hodeidah) Port in Yemen.
According to reports, the airstrikes hit oil facilities in the western port of Hodeidah, resulting in casualties. Houthi spokesperson Mohammed Abdulsalam condemned the Israeli aggression, stating that the strikes aimed to increase the suffering of the Yemeni people.
The recent drone attack in Tel Aviv, which killed one person and injured several others, was claimed by the Houthis as a response to Israel's actions in Gaza. The Houthis have previously targeted shipping in solidarity with Gaza, but this marks the first time Israel has conducted airstrikes in Yemen.
Israel reportedly informed the US prior to the airstrikes, with US President Joe Biden being briefed on the developments in the Middle East. Both the UK and the US have previously carried out strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen in retaliation for attacks on shipping.
In a previous incident in May, US-UK airstrikes in Hodeidah resulted in casualties among Houthi rebels. These strikes were part of a series of coalition actions against the Houthis in Yemen.
