Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency has reported a series of airstrikes carried out by Israeli aircraft on the town of Khiam near the Israeli border. The airstrikes, consisting of 14 consecutive strikes, targeted multiple areas in Khiam within a span of 15 minutes on Sunday afternoon local time.
Khiam, located just 4 kilometers (about 2.5 miles) from the Israeli settlement of Metula, is in close proximity to the town of Kfar Kila, which has already suffered significant damage due to previous Israeli incursions into southern Lebanon.
The National News Agency has attempted to reach out to the Israel Defense Forces for comment on the specific targets of the airstrikes but has not yet received a response. The airstrikes coincided with a visit by Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant to troops stationed at the border.
Israel is currently engaged in a conflict with Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group based in southern Lebanon. Tensions between the two sides have escalated, particularly following Israel’s ongoing war with Hamas in Gaza. Hezbollah has declared its support for Palestinians by launching rockets into Israel, further fueling the cross-border clashes.
As a result of the heightened hostilities, Israel has intensified its bombardment of southern Lebanon to an unprecedented level and has initiated a ground incursion into the country.
