Israel's Military Operations In Gaza And Lebanon For Political Survival

Benjamin Netanyahu looks focused.

Israel's current military actions in Gaza and Lebanon, as well as its response to Iran's missile attack, are seen as crucial for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's political survival. According to a former Israeli diplomat, Netanyahu is prolonging the war to maintain a war-like atmosphere that benefits him politically.

The former consul general to New York, Alon Pinkas, highlighted Netanyahu's desire to extend the conflict to bolster his image as a strong leader. Despite facing criticism after a recent Hamas attack, Netanyahu has shifted his stance and is now focused on eliminating Hamas in Gaza and targeting Hezbollah in Lebanon.

While the war against Hamas enjoys popular support in Israel, it has raised concerns about the long-term implications of continued occupation and strained relations with Palestinians and neighboring countries like Lebanon, which is home to Iran-backed proxies.

Netanyahu's refusal to engage in ceasefire negotiations and his rejection of post-war plans proposed by US President Joe Biden have drawn criticism. Pinkas noted that Netanyahu has disregarded the issue of hostages in Gaza, further complicating the situation.

Despite achieving its objectives in Gaza, Israel's reluctance to pursue a ceasefire could prolong the conflict in Lebanon. Pinkas emphasized the importance of de-escalation through a Gaza ceasefire, but Netanyahu's stance remains unchanged.
