Israel Launches Investigation Into Sara Netanyahu's Alleged Harassment

Israel’s attorney general has ordered police to open an investigation into Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s wife on suspicion of harassing political opponents and a witness in the Israeli leader’s corruption trial. The investigation stems from a recent report by the 'Uvda' investigative program, which uncovered WhatsApp messages suggesting Mrs. Netanyahu instructed a former aide to organize protests against political opponents and intimidate a key witness in the trial.

While the announcement did not mention Mrs. Netanyahu by name, the Justice Ministry declined further comment. In response, Netanyahu defended his wife, highlighting her charitable acts and dismissing the report as 'lies.'

This development adds to the legal challenges faced by the Netanyahus, with the prime minister currently on trial for fraud, breach of trust, and accepting bribes. Netanyahu has consistently denied the charges, attributing them to a 'witch hunt' orchestrated by prosecutors, police, and the media.

The report revealed correspondence between Sara Netanyahu and a former aide, indicating her involvement in encouraging police crackdowns on protesters, organizing demonstrations against critics, and orchestrating smear campaigns. The aide, who passed away last year, shared the messages with a reporter before her death, alleging mistreatment by Mrs. Netanyahu during her illness.

Sara Netanyahu has faced previous accusations of abusive behavior towards staff, excessive spending, and misuse of public funds, contributing to a perception of being disconnected from ordinary Israelis. In 2019, she was fined for misusing state funds.

The announcement of the investigation has sparked political reactions, with National Security Minister calling for the attorney general's dismissal and Justice Minister criticizing the focus on 'television gossip.' The situation continues to unfold amidst ongoing legal and political tensions in Israel.
