Israel & Hamas Have Reached A Ceasefire Agreement In Gaza After 15 Months Of War

After 15 months of warfare and the estimated deaths of 46,000 people, Israel and Hamas have reached a ceasefire and hostage-release deal.

The news was first confirmed by Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani who told the press that a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip is set to take effect on Sunday after intense mediation negotiations. The multi-phased agreement was also confirmed by the United States President Joe Biden.

“This deal will halt the fighting in Gaza, surge much humanitarian assistance to Palestinian civilians, and reunite the hostages with their families after more than 15 months in captivity,” Biden said in a statement.

The agreement — which involves a ceasefire, withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and the release of dozens of hostages held by Hamas — will have a three-phase rollout. According to Biden, the first phase will see a “full and complete ceasefire” for six weeks as negotiations continue along with the release of 33 hostages.

Phase two is scheduled to start in six weeks and considered to be the “permanent end of the war”. However, if the negotiations take longer, the ceasefire “will continue as long as the negotiations continue”.

The third and final phase will see the remains of hostages who have been killed in the war returned to their families while Gaza will undergo a major reconstruction.

Bin Abdulrahman stated that Egypt, Qatar and the United States will “will work to ensure the implementation of the agreement”.

“A joint team from the three countries… will monitor the implementation of the agreement, and everything is being agreed upon and will be in place, hopefully, on the day of execution [of the cease-fire],” he said.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas escalated to war following the October 7, 2023 attacks.

More than 1,200 Israeli soldiers and civilians were killed and 250 hostages were taken. Israel responded with further attacks, killing more than 46,000 Palestinians.
