The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are making preparations for potential ground operations in Lebanon, although they will only be carried out if deemed necessary, according to a spokesperson. IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi recently discussed this option with reserve forces as part of the military's contingency planning.
The primary objective of the Israeli military in relation to Hezbollah is to ensure the safety and security of northern Israel. Approximately 60,000 Israelis have evacuated the area, and the IDF aims to create conditions that will allow them to return home safely, the spokesperson stated.
In response to the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, the IDF spokesperson explained that the targeting of Nasrallah was due to his role in amassing a significant arsenal of weapons, including 200,000 rockets, missiles, and drones. The IDF viewed this buildup as a direct threat to Israel's security, with Nasrallah's intentions believed to be geared towards initiating conflict with Israel.
Since 2006, Israel has been engaged in extensive intelligence operations to monitor and understand the activities of Hezbollah. The IDF has conducted airstrikes both before and after Nasrallah's death, resulting in the elimination of a senior intelligence official and the destruction of strategic assets belonging to Hezbollah.
