Israel arms suspension: UK decision backlash ...The Standard podcast

Listen here on your chosen podcast platform.

The UK Defence Secretary, John Healey, has told his Israeli counterpart that the British government is ‘following the law’ with its decision to suspend around 30 arms export licences over the Gaza conflict.

The controversial move has received some international backlash, partly due to its timing, the announcement came the same day that funerals were held for some of the six Israeli hostages that had been found dead in Gaza over the weekend.

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Britain’s decision “shameful” and “misguided”.

The UK Government says that humanitarian concerns and the treatment of detainees were among the reasons why they suspended some arms sales to Israel, amid concerns a “clear risk” exists that they could be used to breach international humanitarian law.

Nicholas Cecil, the Standard’s Political Editor, explains the decision as well as the potential repercussions.

In part two, rumours are circulating about the potential return of Prince Harry to the royal fold.

It’s after The Duke of Sussex has allegedly parted ways with his American PR advisor and began consultations with ‘old friends’ back in the UK, in what sources say are the first steps towards ‘rehabilitating’ his image or bringing him back into the royal family.

Our features journalist, Maddy Mussen, discusses the rumours and explains why she’s all for the idea of a Harry return.
