Head coach Robert Saleh gave an update Tuesday on running back Israel Abanikanda, who suffered a thigh contusion during Saturday’s preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Saleh said the rookie running back will miss a couple of weeks with the injury. The initial look seemed worse as Abanikanda was down on the ground and couldn’t put weight on his right leg, needing help getting off the field.
A couple of weeks could put Abanikanda in like to return for Week 1. There’s certainly no need to rush him back with Dalvin Cook, Breece Hall and Michael Carter in the mix as well.
After seeing Abanikanda on the ground the way he was on Saturday, this is certainly a sigh of relief for the Jets and their fans. Abanikanda has flashed this preseason and is in like to be the No. 4 running back this season. He ran for 30 yards on four carries Saturday before leaving the game in the fourth quarter.
