Islam Makhachev has no interest in the “BMF” title and thinks the UFC only books fighters to compete for it who are unable to win a real championship.
After nearly four years in purgatory after the initial “BMF” title matchup between Jorge Masvidal vs. Nate Diaz, the promotion is bringing back the belt on July 29 for the Dustin Poirier vs. Justin Gaethje lightweight rematch at UFC 291, which takes place at Vivant Arena in Salt Lake City and airs on pay-per-view.
In addition to fighting for the strap, Poirier (29-7 MMA, 21-6 UFC) and Gaethje (24-4 MMA, 7-4 UFC) could be a potential title eliminator at 155 pounds. The strap is currently held by Makhachev (24-1 MMA, 13-1 UFC), and who had some strong thoughts about the situation.
“If Dustin Poirier beats Justin Gaethje, and he’s gonna fight next for the lightweight title, he’s gonna come with ‘BMF’ title? I don’t want this sh*t,” Makhachev said in an interview on Daniel Cormier’s YouTube channel. “‘BMF,’ what is this? This belt’s for the bums. First time who fought for this belt? Masvidal and Nate Diaz. Two people (who) never can be champion, you know? They give him some belt (and say), ‘Be happy, fight for ‘BMF.’
Makhachev, 31, made it clear he has no desire to add the “BMF” title to his collection, and instead is keeping focus on the official championship that’s in his possession, and could potentially put it on the line next against Charles Olivera in a rematch at UFC 294 in October.
“Dana has to stop this,” Makhachev said. “After this, please tell him to stop. Honestly, if someone give me this belt tomorrow, I don’t want this sh*t. And that’s it. I can beat these guys easy.”
As far as who wins, the fight, Makhachev ultimately anticipates the same final result as when the pair first fought in April 2018.
“I think Poirier wins,” Makhachev said. “What Gaethje have for Poirier? Poirier have good boxing, better than Gaethje. And that’s it. It’s going to be a boxing match.”
