ISIS bride Lisa Smith found not guilty of attempting to finance terrorists

A former Irish soldier has been found not guilty of trying to finance ISIS.

Ex soldier Lisa Smith, 39, has been found by a court to be not guilty of attempting to finance the terrorist organisation.

Ms Smith, 39, who was a member of the Irish Defence Forces, went on trial earlier this year at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin.

The judge said it could not be ruled beyond reasonable doubt that Smith's intention to send 800 euro to a so-called Islamic State member was either for charitable or humanitarian reasons.

Mr Justice Tony Hunt said there was "sufficient ambiguity" as to the reasonable doubt and acquitted Smith of the charge.

Smith, 39, faces a second charge of being a membership of a terrorist organisation, which the court will rule on Monday.

Smith once accompanied an ex-president and leader of Ireland on foreign trips as a member of the Irish Defence Forces but went to the war-torn Syria in 2015 after converting to Islam and becoming radicalised.

The 38-year-old repeatedly denied the allegations and claimed she went to live in the declared Islamic State to follow the teachings of the Koran.

In 2019, it emerged the terror suspect was forced to stay in her cell in a segregation wing at Limerick Prison for 20 hours a day, the Irish Daily Mirror reported.

She was also understood to be wearing her black traditional abaya robe while in her cell and spends her time reading, according to a source.
