Wetherspoons has decided to pull the plug on a £3m revamp of the Master Mariner and sell the pub.
The Master Mariner in New Brighton, Wirral, had been the subject of a £3 million revamp which included expanding into the adjoining Lacy’s Bar. Works were set to be completed in August 2022, but the "poor state" of Lacy's Bar presented significant hurdles to the revamp.
This lead to the building being demolished after an "indefinite" pause to review the project.

Wetherspoons has now announced a decision to pull the plug on the redevelopment of the pub which originally opened in 2013, and sell the building and the adjoining land. They said it was a "commercial decision" to sell up, and confirmed no redundancies will come as a result of the sale.

Angela Eagle, Wallasey MP, said the decision was "incredibly frustrating," adding that the development and investment in the local community had been a "welcome project." She said the pub has been left in a "far worse off" position than before.
Confirming the decision yesterday, a spokesperson for Wetherspoons said: "Wetherspoon can confirm that it has stopped redevelopment work at The Master Mariner pub (New Brighton) and will not progress with the work. The building and the land is to be put up for sale.
“All staff will continue to work at other Wetherspoon pubs and there will be no redundancies as a result of the pub being sold. This is a commercial decision by Wetherspoon.
“The company remains committed to the Wirral and have a number of pubs in the region, including the recently opened pub in Heswall."
