Is VAR used in Carabao Cup? Quarter-final rules including extra-time and penalties

Excitement is building as we head into the latter stages of the Carabao Cup, with eight teams up all vying to lift the first major trophy of the campaign come the final in two months' time.

It has been quite a rollercoaster competition so far - Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham have all been knocked out, leaving Manchester City and Manchester United as the two favourites for silverware alongside Newcastle United and Leicester City.

Although that doesn't mean that Nottingham Forest, Wolves, Southampton and League One outfit Charlton - the only London-based side left in the competition - should be ruled out from winning their first major trophies of this century just yet.

With the quarter finals taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday evening we take a look at the questions on fans minds', including VAR usage, extra time queries and Wembley date dreams. Football.london has the lowdown on everything you need to know.

Is there VAR in the Carabao Cup?

Unlike the FA Cup, where Premier League teams use VAR but other don't, the Carabao Cup doesn't use VAR in early rounds with a blanket rule in place.

The decision was taken at the start of the season not to use it until at least the semi-finals, where any stadiums without installation would be granted an allowance to put it in.

Is there extra time and penalties in the Carabao Cup?

As per the previous rounds, there is no extra time in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals if the scores are level after 90 minutes - matches advance straight to penalties. This changes for the semi-finals if clubs cannot be separated over two legs, with extra-time then used.

When are the semi-finals?

The semi-finals for the Carabao Cup will be held on the week commencing 23rd January 2023, with the second leg being held the week after.

When is the final?

The final will take place at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, February 26, 2023.
