"Is this a joke?": Makeshift sign warns Ryanair passengers of two-hour wait for baggage at Manchester Airport

Ryanair passengers arriving at Manchester Airport in the early hours of the morning were met with a makeshift sign warning them of two-hour waits for luggage.

A picture of the paper sign was sent to the Manchester Evening News by a holidaymaker who arrived at the airport at around 2am on Wednesday morning (June 8). He took a photo of the notice after arriving in the baggage reclaim hall.

The sign said: 'Ryanair bags. Please be advised bag delivery time is taking approximately 2 hours. We apologise for the delay and are working hard to get the bag to you'. The passenger also tweeted the picture and tagged Ryanair in, then asked the airline: "Is this a joke?".

This comes after weeks of baggage chaos at the airport, with heaps of luggage being piled up at the carousel, missing baggage spotted from 1,300 miles away and scenes of 'pandemonium' as TUI customers were told to go home without their luggage after waiting hours for it to come off the plane.

The airport has said that airlines and ground-handlers are responsible for their own services, and that they have been plagued by staff shortages which are happening across the whole travel industry. Passengers have been urged to direct any baggage concerns to their airlines, who are 'best placed to respond'.

Yesterday it was announced that a new managing director, Chris Woodroofe, had been appointed at the airport. This came after the departure of Karen Smart, who quit in April following a backlash over long passenger queues, staff shortages and calls from city leaders for management to 'get a grip' of the crisis.

The Manchester Evening News has contacted Ryanair for a comment.
