Is there extra time and penalties in Carabao Cup? Full rules and VAR use for quarter-final

Manchester United face Charlton Athletic on Tuesday night as they aim to reach the semi-final of the Carabao Cup and move closer to winning their first piece of silverware under Erik ten Hag.

United were given what appears on paper to be a relatively easy draw as Charlton are the only side left in the competition who are not in the Premier League. They avoided playing the likes of Manchester City and Newcastle United but could meet them if they quality for the semi-final and beyond.

Ahead of the match, the Manchester Evening News has all you need to know about the quarter-final stage. Will VAR be used, is there extra time and penalties and when are the semi-finals if Ten Hag's team progresses?

When is kick-off?

Date: Tuesday 10th January

Time: 8 pm (GMT)

Location: Old Trafford, Manchester

Will VAR be used in the quarter-finals?

Despite the game being played at Old Trafford, VAR will not be used for United's encounter with Charlton on Tuesday night. All decisions will be down to Jarred Gillet - who is refereeing the first United match of his career- and his assistants.

Is there extra time and penalties?

There is no extra time in the EFL Cup until the semi-finals, however any game that is level after 90 minutes in the quarter-finals will be decided by a penalty shoot-out.

When are the semi-finals?

If United do overcome Charlton in the quarter-finals, they will have to play a two-leg semi-final on January 25th and then February 1st. Who they would face will be decided after Manchester City's game against Southampton on Wednesday 11th January.
