Is there a special prayer during Eid al-Adha and when is it?

With Eid 2022 just around the corner, many Muslims will be making plans this weekend to celebrate the holiday with friends and family.

However, like any other holiday in Islam, it is closely linked to the religion and its practices. That's why many may be wondering if they need to perform any special prayers during Eid al-Adha.

In a typical day, Muslims are expected to pray a minimum of five times a day and it is one of the most important forms of worship. But some may be unaware that a special prayer takes place during Eid al-Adha.

Known as Eid Salat, the special prayer can take place either in a congregation in a mosque or at home. In fact, some encourage to perform Eid Salat at home as the ritual Qurbani can then take place, with the meat being distributed among neighbours and the poor.

How Eid prayer differs from regular prayer

Eid Salat consists of two 'rakats' (a set of movements and words recited during prayer). However, where it differs from regular Salat is that the Eid prayer begin with six Takbirs (praising God) rather than the usual one.

A sermon, known in Arabic as a Khutbah, will also be delivered by the Imam, which will focus on a wide range of topics relating to the special day.

Things you can do before Eid prayer takes place

There are a few extra practices a Muslim can choose to do before performing the Eid Salat. Some of these practices are considered Sunnah (practices the prophet Muhammad did) and are therefore believed to be spiritually rewarding. Here is a list of a few extra things you can do to properly prepare for Eid Salat:

  • Take Ghusl (a ritual bath) before prayer
  • Dress up in nice and clean clothes for the occasion
  • Pray Fajr (early morning prayer) - the prophet Muhammad used to wake up early in the morning to prepare for prayers
  • Eat dates before going to prayer
  • Exchange gifts with friends and family
