Is the Nintendo Switch 2 backwards compatible? Here’s what we know

Finally. The day has come. The Nintendo Switch 2 has officially been revealed after months (years?) of rumors and speculation.

Nintendo gave the world the first official look at its console this morning and released a handful of details surrounding it.

THE BEST GAMES FOR THE SWITCH: What are the best titles?

One of those details was the answer to an age-old important question that comes around whenever there’s a new console announced. That question is this: Will it be backwards compatible?

Folks want to know if the Nintendo Switch 2 will be able to play the old Nintendo Switch games that we’ve been playing for most of the last decade.

Fortunately, in the presentation, Nintendo provided an answer.

Is the Nintendo Switch 2 backwards compatible?

The simple answer is yes. The Nintendo Switch 2 will be backwards compatible with most Nintendo Switch games. That includes both the digital and physical versions of those games.

More details on which games will be playable on the Switch 2 will be made available by Nintendo later on.

Nintendo will also be using the same Switch Online service, according to Nintendo, so you won’t need to purchase another membership for your new console once it arrives.

We’ll get more information on the Switch 2 during its Nintendo Direct presentation on April 2. Until then, the information we have now is plenty.
