Is Southport one of the worst seaside towns in the country?

Southport has been named among the worst seaside towns in the country by the Telegraph.

Despite its expansive sandy beaches and rich history, Southport was given a rating of 28 out of 100 in the Telegraph's recent round-up of the 20 best and worst seaside towns in Britain.

The Telegraph's choice will no doubt divide opinion, with many Merseysider's having fond memories of the town. For comparison, the paper rated Brighton 76 out of 100 points and Margate 69 out of 100.

Do you think Southport deserves the rating as one of the worst seaside towns in the country? Do you think it deserves better, do you think it deserves worse? Take our poll and tell us your reasoning in the comments below.

Among the other seaside towns rated at the bottom of the pile was Morecombe, which received a rating of 24 out of 100 and Blackpool which received a rating of 22 out of 100.

Southport has a rich history. Its ever popular Lord Street - lined with high street favourites, independent stores, cafes, and more - is believed to be the inspiration behind the world famous tree-lined avenue of the Champs-Élysées in Paris.

However, the Telegraph was unimpressed and said "the armpit of an area around the railway station reflects the sorry state of the local economy". The opening of the Grand theatre, bar and restaurant, however, was praised, with the paper concluding: "Southport needs to reassert itself if it wants to challenge Formby, down the coast, and Lytham, across the Ribble."
