Is Seahawks safety Jamal Adams’ durability a real concern?

The Seattle Seahawks opened training camp this week with a number of returning veterans who are finally healthy, but strong safety Jamal Adams is not one of them.

Adams suffered a season-ending shoulder injury last year which required surgery to repair. It was his second labrum procedure in as many years. He also underwent a hand procedure to correct some broken fingers.

After the first day of camp, Coach Pete Carroll had nothing but positive news on the Adams’ front.

He’s really pumped about it, he feels great, he had a really profitable offseason, and he’s really raring to go,” Carroll told reporters Wednesday. “His mind is in a great spot. To come back with Quandre (Diggs) back there, those two guys really solidify what we are all about back there and take the leadership for our club.”

Unfortunately, it appears Adams will be sidelined once again, with no clear-cut timeline for return. Expectations have been high for the safety since he was acquired in a blockbuster trade with the Jets in 2020. Many have been quick to question Adams’ durability so a healthy season would go a long way towards easing those concerns.

Jamal is going to take some time to try to figure out, he had a couple of surgeries that he was working on, and yesterday, his hand just wasn’t right,” Carroll explained. “He’s getting some opinions about it, so we will see what that means. I don’t know right now, but I don’t have anything to advance today other than us exchanging in conversation last night. He’s looking into some stuff and he’s trying to get things figured out.”

The Seahawks practically broke the bank to bring Adams to Seattle and he’s only appeared in 12 games in each of his two years in the Emerald City. Now, with another potential operation looming on the horizon, another shortened season may be difficult to avoid.
