Is Sam Mitchell leaving EastEnders? Kim Medcalf's soap future revealed after exit

EastEnders aired an exit for Sam Mitchell on Thursday night, as actress Kim Medcalf appeared to bow out of the BBC soap.

Viewers were left gutted to see Sam leave, barely a year after her big return to the show after a long time away.

But has Sam really left the soap, or will she be back? Viewers were left needing answers as Sam said goodbye to her loved ones including son Ricky.

After getting a major business opportunity in Spain this week, she decided to take it as it would bring in plenty of money.

She didn't exactly win over Ricky or her family when she told them her plan to go to Spain, but Sam made it clear it wasn't forever.

In her final scenes, for now, Sam told Ricky she would be calling him every day until she was back in Albert Square - while she did not specify when this would be.

EastEnders has confirmed Sam isn't making a permanent departure and will be back at some point.

While she won't be back too soon, it's not been confirmed when Sam will come back but it definitely isn't goodbye for her.

Viewers would be forgiven for thinking it was the end of Sam again, after her teary exit scenes with Ricky and pal Zack Hudson.

Ricky had spent the week moaning at his mother, after they were estranged for years and now she was leaving again, just as they started getting somewhere.

He's about to become a dad too, aged 12, after finding out 12-year-old Lily Slater was pregnant with his baby after they slept together in secret.

While he continues to support Lily, who is keeping their baby, his mum is now fleeing - and Ricky had plenty to say on the matter.

Sam was distraught, after explaining to Honey that her main reason for taking the job is to get money for Ricky and Lily.

Ricky finally came round to the idea on Thursday night, telling his mother he loved her and hugging her before she left.

Sam burst into tears as she made amends with her son, and promised him holidays and lots of money for the baby.

Ricky said: "You meant all of that, yeah? Free holidays, a shed load of cash for me, Lily and the baby?"

Sam replied: "So much, your daughter isn’t gonna know what hit her. My diary is gonna be busy with all those calls I'm gonna be making, one a day every day until I get back."

She added: "You know when your daughter is born, she is gonna be your world just like you are mine, and she's so lucky to have you just like I am."

She then got in the back of a cab and waved at her son, as she left the soap for however long.

EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
