Is Prudential Financial Stock Outperforming the Dow

Prudential Financial, Inc. (PRU), based in Newark, New Jersey, is a major player in the global financial services industry. With a market cap of $42.57 billion, a significant market presence, and a diverse portfolio, PRU offers a wide range of insurance, investment management, and financial products. Committed to sustainability and responsible business practices, PRU invests in innovative solutions to enhance the financial well-being of its customers and the communities it serves while promoting economic growth and stability.

Companies valued at $10 billion or more are generally considered "large-caps," and Prudential Financial fits this criterion perfectly, signifying its substantial size, stability, and influence in the financial services sector. PRU continually advances the industry by focusing on innovative financial solutions and responsible business practices, enhancing its offerings in insurance, investment management, and financial products to meet the evolving needs of its customers while promoting economic stability and growth.

PRU shares are trading 2.3% below their 52-week high of $121.39, which they hit on May 17. PRU has seen a 2.6% gain over the last three months compared to the marginal decline seen in the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) during the same period.

In the long term, PRU is up 14.4% on a YTD basis, and the shares have gained 41.4% over the past 52 weeks. In comparison, the Dow is up 3.8% in 2024 and 16% over the past year.

To confirm its bullish trend, PRU has been trading above its 200-day moving average since early November 2023 and its 50-day moving average since mid-June.

PRU shares declined 1.3% on Apr. 30, when it released the Q1 earnings report, but gained 1.7% the following day. The company reported a profit of $1.14 billion, translating to $3.12 per share. This fell short of Wall Street expectations of $3.16 per share. The company's revenue for the period was $21.7 billion, surpassing forecasts.

Highlighting the contrast in performance, one of PRU's industry participants, American International Group, Inc. (AIG), has underperformed PRU, with a 10% gain on a YTD basis.

Despite PRU's outperformance compared to DOWI, analysts are cautious about its prospects. The stock has a consensus rating of "Hold" from 16 analysts in coverage. The mean price target of $114.69 indicates that the stock trades at a premium.
