Is Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front dubbed?

Netflix has a great track record of releasing celebrated blockbusters and ground-breaking original series. The streaming giant drops exciting new films and shows every week that keep us glued to both our sofas and our screens.

One of its latest hits is war film All Quiet on the Western Front, which currently sits at number two in Netflix’s top 10 films, behind true crime-thriller The Good Nurse. Based on Erich Maria Remarque’s 1929 bestseller of the same name, the film is a harrowing account of the harsh realities of war based on his own experiences in the German Army.

The film largely takes place in and around the trenches of the Western Front – one of the main areas of battle during World War I – and follows a young soldier who enlists in the German Army with his friends. Unlike many war films released in the West, All Quiet on the Western Front is told from the perspective of a young German soldier rather than an American or a Brit.

Its original title is Im Westen nichts Neues – which translates as In the West Nothing New. It was written largely as an antiwar novel, and was one of the books burnt by the Nazis when they rose to power as they deemed it “degenerate art” and an insult to Germany.

The film is helmed by German director Edward Berger and boasts an ensemble cast of German actors including Felix Kammerer and Daniel Brühl. Perhaps unsurprisingly then, the film’s dialogue is also in German.

Netflix’s default viewing option for All Quiet on the Western Front is German audio with English subtitles. But as with many foreign language films these days, Netflix has added the option to watch with dubbed audio in English – as well as many other languages including Polish, French and Hindi.

So, if you fancy a gripping yet poignant war film this weekend but do not feel like watching with subtitles, Netflix has you covered.
