Is Manchester red or blue? Official results ahead of Manchester United vs Man City FA Cup final

Our Manchester football fan map has revealed which parts of our region are red and which areas are blue.

It’s always been a contentious topic among football fans in this part of the world. So where exactly do followers of City and United really come from?

In the run-up to Saturday’s historic FA Cup clash at Wembley - the first time both Manchester clubs have met in the final - we asked both sets of supporters to tell us which part of Greater Manchester they live in so that we could map out which areas can be claimed by each side.

It’s a completely unscientific survey that’s just for fun - but does reveal some fascinating results.

Previous versions of our study have shown some general themes. Stockport is predominantly a City-supporting region while Salford is firmly Red.

City have traditionally had strongholds in East and North Manchester, while the west of the city has usually seen a large number of United fans.

But the world of football moves fast. When we first ran this Survey, Sir Alex Ferguson was still managing United while Sergio Aguero was still two weeks away from winning City their first title in 44 years with that famous, last-minute strike against Queens Park Rangers.

Since then, City have gone on to win five titles in the past six years under Pep Guardiola, while United have endured a period of upheaval, but finally look to be building again under new boss Erik ten Hag.

Saturday’s match could certainly go either way and looks set to be an incredible spectacle, but whoever takes the bragging rights away from Wembley, fans of both teams can continue to argue over the results of our very unscientific survey, which may throw up a few surprises.

With nearly 2,000 responses, we have been able to map out the region once again and found that City enjoy the strongest support in places such as East Manchester, Middleton and Denton, as well as Wilmslow, Cheadle and Altrincham.

United, on the other hand, continue to dominate the likes of Salford, Stretford and Swinton but also had the largest following in the city centre.

Other areas with a strong United supporter base included Mossley, Irlam, Whitefield and Heywood.

City fans, meanwhile, are in the majority in Failsworth, Chadderton, Marple and Bramhall.
