Is ITV's Malpractice based on a true story?

A ITV drama is reaching British screens today called Malpractice, telling the story of a doctor whose patient dies during a "nightmare shift".

Featuring Niamh Algar in the lead role of Dr Lucinda Edwards, a "smart" and "battle-hardened" doctor, she sees her patient, Edith Owusu, played by Sherelle Armstrong, die of an opioid overdose. While Dr Edwards is supported by her medical supervisor, played by James Purefoy, an investigation is held into the death.

The investigation is led by Dr Norma Callahan, played by Helen Behan, and a former colleague of Dr Edward's, Dr George Adjei, played by Jordan Kouamé.

With Dr Callahan suspicious of Dr Edwards, we see the pressure mounting on her as her "professional exterior begins to crack".

The new show is written by Grace Ofori-Attah and is directed by Philip Baratini. Despite the realistic and modern setting, the show is not based on a true story. The five episodes of the show will cover a fictional investigation.

However, write Grace Ofori-Attah was once a doctor, which may help give the show an extra edge of realism. Either way, the show will be on screens on ITV for the next five weeks.

You can watch Malpractice on ITV One.
