Is Hamilton coming to Cardiff? Wales Millennium Centre drops huge musical hint

It looks as though hit musical Hamilton could be set to come to Cardiff after Wales' Millenium Centre theatre in Cardiff Bay posted a cryptic clip on social media. In an eight second clip, the theatre simply posted the words "wait for it" alongside a yellow star adorned with a silhouette - which looks very similar to branding on the Hamilon theatre show posters.

And to make things more obvious, fans of the show will know that "wait for it" is indeed the name of a song from the musical. No more details were shared in the clip but it was certainly enough to get people excited.

Hamilton, penned by Lin-Manuel Miranda's is based on the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton and casts non-white actors as the Founding Fathers of America and other historical figures. The show combines traditional-style show tunes alongside hip hop, R&B, pop and soul in its musical numbers for a modern twist on history.

Since its premier in 2015 the show went on to be nominated for a record-breaking 16 Tony Awards, winning 11 and received the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The show first arrived in the UK in 2017 to mass acclaim after its Broadway run.

And while it's yet to be confirmed by the Wales Millenium Centre, or by the Hamilton production itself, it wouldn't be too unusual for the cast to do a stint in the Welsh capital given its writer, Lin-Manuel Miranda loves the city. Miranda used to play a part in the musical as Alexander Hamilton but signed off in 2016.

In 2018 he was spotted in Porter's bar in the city centre where he shocked revellers with a surprise performance. At a monthly Jane’s Calamity event in September 2018, the night which is usually a grouo of diehard regulars gathered round the piano, the huge theatre star made an appearance.

As crowd broke in to the opening song from Hamilton a man in a hoodie made his way towards the stage only to reveal but it was in fact Lin-Manuel Miranda himself. The American, who is in the capital filming the brand new version of Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials, then stuck around with his family to enjoy the rest of evening amongst the crowd. And with speculating mounting that the hit musical could be coming to Cardiff, people have barely been able to contain their excitement. The short clip posted on Monday, April 17, had already amassed over 1,200 comments and 700 reactions in just 15 hours.
One person commented: "OMG Hamilton!!!!" while another also picked up the clue, "Hamilton! We are all over this". Others who had already seen the show elsewhere said they had waited "a long time" for the musical to come to Cardiff. No dates have been announced but it is expected that if the production were to visit the city it would be in 2024.
