Is Enzo Fernandez signing for Chelsea? Transfer fee and Jorginho deadline day impact

Chelsea's pursuit of Enzo Fernandez has been one of the biggest stories in the January transfer window, with the World Cup-winning star being eyed to boost the Blues midfield.

The signing would be a huge one, with Benfica demanding a £105 million fee for the Argentina international. This would represent a British record for a transfer while also taking Chelsea's spending for the season above the £500 million mark in what has been a remarkable transfer spree by co-owner Todd Boehly.

The Chelsea hierarchy have little time left to complete the deal, with just hours left of the January transfer window. The deadline is at 11pm for English clubs and they will be hopeful of securing a deal before then with lots to resolve before the window slams shut.

Here is a round-up of the latest on Chelsea's pursuit of Fernandez.

Deadline day latest

Football.london's Chelsea correspondent Adam Newson reports: "Chelsea are still waiting for Benfica to make a definitive decision over the future of Enzo Fernandez. The Blues made an official bid yesterday but the structure of the deal remains the key element.

"Benfica president Rui Costa is believed to be the key figure in negotiations and whatever he decides will be the club's final decision."

Benfica squad omission

Fernandez has been omitted from the Benfica squad for tonight's Liga Nos fixture against Arouca, hinting that the Argentine could well be in negotiations with Chelsea and unable to travel.

Fernandez also missed training on Monday as he could be leveraging his club in order to force through a move to west London. Amid much speculation, this is the strongest hint yet that a move could be set to take place.

Jorginho move

Jorginho's deadline day transfer to Arsenal appears close to completion, with the Chelsea midfielder appearing close to a £12million move to north London.

Jorginho's departure would help facilitate a move, with Fernandez occupying a central midfield role. Jorginho remaining at Chelsea would have the potential of leaving too many central midfielders at the club and his wages could also be used to fund some aspects of the deal.

With six months remaining on his contract, it looks like a good deal for all involved and if it can facilitate a move to sign Fernandez then Chelsea fans will be very happy.

Social media hint

Chelsea fans have spotted a subtle hint on the club's Twitter feed which could suggest a transfer is about to happen, with the club deleting its Twitter bio as it did before the announcement of Mykhailo Mudryk's signing.

The move would continue Chelsea's unique strategy of announcing signings via its Twitter bio as well as via Instagram and the developments have got fans very excited.
